LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- They Loyola Marymount beach volleyball team took home the West Coast Conference Championships title Saturday afternoon, as the team beat Pepperdine twice to take the title.
The Lions started the morning off against the No. 1 seeded Pepperdine, where LMU fell 3-2.
Savannah Slattery and
Bo Culo fell on court one, 21-13, 21-14, while
Megan Nash and
Reka Orsi Toth fell after forcing three sets, 18-21, 21-19, 15-13 on court two.
Sara Kovac and
Jessie Prichard forced their opponents to three sets and came out with the win on court three, 24-26, 21-18, 27-25, while
Veronica Nederend and
Emma Doud picked up a quick 21-12, 21-19 win on court four.
Paige Panter and
Erin Martin lost to their opponents on court six, 15-21, 23-21, 15-11, giving the Waves the win.
The Lions' loss put them up against Saint Mary's in their second game, where the Lions won 4-1. Slattery and Culo fell 21-15, 21-14, giving the Gaels their only point of the match.
Nash and Culo won 21-12, 21-16, while Kovac and Prichard won after a neck and neck second set, 21-19, 27-25. Nederend and Doud picked up a 21-17, 21-15 win, while Panter and Martin won 21-14, 21-17.
The Lions' win advanced the team to the next round, where LMU beat Pepperdine for the first time in program history, as the team won 3-1.
The Waves took their only point on court one, as Slattery and Culo fell 21-16, 21-17. Nederend and Doud picked up a 21-19, 21-19 win, while Kovac and Prichard won 21-16, 21-19.
Nash and Orsi Toth clinched the match for the Lions after pushing Pepperdine to three sets, coming out with a 21-12, 17-21, 15-11 win, advancing LMU to the finals.
The Lions had a neck and neck match for the Championship Final against Pepperdine, as the Lions won 3-2.
Kovac and Prichard picked up an easy 21-11, 21-15 win, while Nash and Orsi Toth won 21-18, 21-18.
Slattery and Culo fell 21-12, 27-25, while Panter and Martin fell 21-17, 21-17, making it a 2-2 match.
With the title left up to court four, Nederend and Doud forced the Waves to a third set, where they came out with a 21-13, 17-21, 16-14 win, clinching the match for the Lions and giving them their first ever WCC Championship title.
