LOS ANGELES – LMU locked up the number three seed for next weekend's Golden Coast Conference Tournament with a 15-8 win over Concordia. The #12 Lions close out the regular season with 19 wins, the team's most over the last four seasons.
Abbey Grosse opened the game with a goal at the 5:16 mark of the third. Just under a minute later, CUI evened the game with a powerplay goal. A
Marialena Seletopoulou goal with 3:03 in the period gave the lead back to the Lions until the Eagles again equalized a minute later.
Mollie Williams converted a 5-Meter goal with 20 seconds remaining to send LMU into the second ahead 3-2.
A quick CUI powerplay conversion early in the second quarter evened the game at 3-apiece, but six consecutive LMU goals pushed the Lions ahead for good. The six unanswered were started by
Hana Vilanova, followed by two from
Alena Sanchez, then one each from
Katie Hungerford, Grosse, and Williams. A late powerplay goal by Concordia made it a 9-4 game at intermission.
The Lions hit double-digits with
Melyssa Moore's goal at the 6:20 mark of the third. Sanchez scored her third of the day following a timeout to push the LMU lead to 11-4.
Each team added four goals in the final quarter. Concordia scored 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, but LMU responded with back-to-back goals from
Isabella Barajas and
Julie Zanobini. Brianana Quade and
Reagan Denny each added goals late to counter three more from CUI, wrapping the game at 15-8.
Sky Flores made five saves in goal and earned the win, while
Elizabeth Bradley came on late to record three saves.
LMU finishes conference play at 5-2, tying for second with San Diego State. The Aztecs hold the tiebreaker heading into the GCC Championships on Apr. 26-28. Final matchups will be set after Saturday's remaining games around the league.
