LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount men's basketball team has advanced to the semifinal round of the Roman College Basketball Invitational following Monday night's 81-63 home win over Brown. The Lions (22-11, 8-8 WCC) have won two postseason tournament games for the third time in program history, and look to make it three postseason wins for the first time since the Elite 8 run of 1990.
Standing in LMU's way is a semi-familiar opponent in University of South Florida (21-13, 8-10 American). Although the two programs have only faced each other in the 2005 Rainbow Classic, the Lions and Bulls both were part of this season's field at the 2018 Jamaica Classic. LMU won the Montego Bay division title with wins over Georgetown and Ohio, while USF beat the Bobcats, but lost to the Hoyas in overtime.
The Bulls enter the game leading the nation with 935 free throws attempted and are top-4 in the country in offensive rebounds per game at 13.85. Keeping USF off the line and off the glass will be focusses for an LMU team that boasts the 14th-ranked scoring defense in Division I at 62.7 ppg.
The defense was on full display at Hank's House on Monday. LMU forced 20 Brown turnovers, and turned those into 35 additional points. The 12 steals from the Lions tied a season-best mark.
James Batemon (1st),
Joe Quintana (5th) and
Jeffery McClendon (6th) all rank in the top-6 of the WCC in steals per game and combined for eight between the trio against the Bears. On South Florida's side, Laquincy Rideau (1st) and David Collins (4th) are also amongst their conference's leaders in steals per game each at over 2.0 apiece.
USF has yet to leave the Yuengling Center during their CBI journey, beating both Stony Brook and Utah Valley at home to advance to Thursday night's game. The game will tip at 7 p.m. EST (4 p.m. PST) on Bullsvision through South Florida's website.
