Lions take down Cougars

The Loyola Marymount Lions (15-8, 5-1 WCC) ran past the Washington State Cougars on Monday afternoon, 3-2 with head coach Jason Gill going deep into his lineup to produce the beginning of the week victory.

Getting the start for LMU was redshirt sophomore Sean Paquet who surrendered only three hits and two walks while striking out six in his 4.0 scoreless innings of work. Coming in to relief Paquet was Giuseppe Benedetti who's 2.1 innings of three hit, one run baseball gave the redshirt sophomore his third win of the season. Matt Voelker picked up his fifth save on the year, helping secure the victory for the Lions.

LMU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom half of the third when Dylan Hirsch worked a two out walk then promptly stole second giving the Lions a runner in scoring position. Freshman Matthew Piotrowski then sent a Tyson Guerrero delivery high into the Page Stadium sky and second basemen Grant DeLappe misplayed the ball and it landed safely in the infield allowing Hirsch to score and gave LMU the first run of the game.

The Cougars tied the game at one apiece in the top of the fifth when Kodie Kolden hit a Benedetti delivery off his foot into the glover of Nick Sogard who's only play was to first allowing Koby Blunt to score from third tying the game.

The Lions picked up the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth off freshman Tommy Delgado's bat when he sent a shot to right field, bringing in Brandon Shearer and picking up his ninth RBI of the season.

LMU got an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Sogard singled past Andres Alvarez, plating the pinch runner Harry Hibberd which proved to be incredibly valuable as Washington State scored a run in the top of the ninth and threatened to tie the game with a man 90-feet away. However, surehanded Sogard cradled a Dillon Plew shot to short and retired the Cougars and ended the game in favor of LMU.

The Lions conclude their season long nine-game homestand tomorrow evening when they welcome the UCLA Bruins to Page Stadium with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
