The Loyola Marymount Lions (14-7, 5-0 WCC) put together a victory in comeback fashion behind an eighth inning rally and timely hitting and baserunning in the bottom of the 11
thto beat Pacific 6-5, extending their season-high win streak to eight.
Â
Josh Agnew got the start on the hill for LMU and gave head coach
Jason Gill 5.1 innings conceding six hits, four runs, two walks, while striking out five on 95 total pitches.Â
Â
Agnew was able to pitch in and out of jams for the Lions. He ran in to trouble in the top of the first, loading the bases on two outs, but was able to get Pacific's Keaton Glover to strike out swinging ending the threat for the Tigers. Agnew settled down through the fourth but ran into trouble in the fifth giving up two runs off the bats of Tigers hitters James Free and Alex LeForestier.Â
Â
The Lions were able to plate the game's first run in their half of the third inning when
Nick Sogard scored from third off the failed pickoff attempt on
Cooper Uhl at first by Pacific's Hayden Pearce.Â
Â
Pacific scored three runs in their half of the sixth chasing Agnew from the game and extending their lead to four but the Lions were able to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the seventh when freshman
Tommy Delgado singled up the middle bringing in LMU's
Brandon Shearer.Â
Â
The Lions put together their late game heroics in the bottom half of the eighth innocently enough.
Ryan Kawano pinch hit for freshman
Ben Grunberg and singled past the shortstop. Gill sensing the need for speedy baserunners inserted
Harry Hibberd to run for Kawano and the move paid off. Sogard hit a shot sharply to the pitcher and Hibberd's speed affected Pacific's Nick Swanson because his errant throw allowed the Lions to have two runners on. Following a Uhl strikeout, Shearer singled to second base setting the table for the red-hot
Trevin Esquerra. He hit a shot into the night sky for a double and brought in all three Lions runs in the inning, tying the game and brought the crowd at Page to their feet.Â
Â
The Lions and Tigers moved into extra innings setting the table for
Matthew Piotrowski's RBI single over the head of Pacific's shortstop securing the win for the Lions and the center field celebration.
Â
The story of the game for LMU however was Sogard. The leadoff hitter was 5-for-6 with four singles, one double, two runs scored and a stolen base. The Lions needed every bit of it tonight and the junior delivered.
Â
The Lions and Tigers get right back into action on Sunday afternoon for the final game of the three-game series with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
