CLAREMONT, Calif. – The 12
th-ranked Loyola Marymount women's water polo team (9-7) won both games at the Claremont Convergence for the second-straight day. The Lions went undefeated in the tournament with Saturday wins over Virginia Military Institute and Sonoma State, opening both games with 7-1 leads after each first quarter.
GAME 1: #12 LMU 12, Virginia Military Institute 6
The Lions scored seven times in the first quarter, and took a 7-1 lead after one period.
Marialena Seletopoulou opened the game with two goals and
Mollie Williams added the team's third before VMI got on the board.
Morgan Molloy made it a 4-1 game before
Katie Hungerford added back-to-back goals and
Hana Vilanova closed out the period with her first.
After VMI opened the second with a pair of goals, LMU closed out the period with goals by
Melyssa Moore and
Serena Zafiris to push it to a 9-3 game at the break.
The Keydets scored the lone goal of the third quarter.
Isabella Barajas kicked off the final period with a goal to make it 10-4. After VMI followed up with a goal,
Ryan-Marie Ickes and
Reagan Denny each added to the LMU lead with their first goals of the day. The Keydets scored on their final possession to make it a 12-6 final.
GAME 2: #12 LMU 15, Sonoma State 6
Much like the morning game, LMU scored the game's first three goals and carried a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.
Morgan Molloy scored two of the first three goals, with
Abbey Grosse adding one as well. After SSU got on the board,
Hana Vilanova closed out the period with a pair of goals and
Mollie Williams and
Marialena Seletopoulou added one a piece in the first quarter.
Melyssa Moore scored three consecutive goals within a minute and a half of each other to open the second quarter. The Seawolves answered with two in a row before
Megan Plank closed out the half with one to make it an 11-3 lead.
Sonoma State outscored the Lions 3-1 in the third quarter, with
Isabella Barajas scoring the lone LMU goal.
The Lions closed out the game with all three goals in the final eight minutes.
Megan Plank opened the period with a 5-meter score and followed it up with an even-strength goal.
Havana Campo scored with 34 seconds on the clock to make it a 15-6 final.

The Lions will make their home debut with the return of the LMU Invitational. The tournament will take place from March 15-16.
