LOS ANGELES, Calif. - For the first time since 2012, the Loyola Marymount University men's basketball program's season will play in the postseason. LMU's memorable season, which began with a program-record 8-0 start, continues this Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. game at California Baptist in Riverside, Calif. as part of the Roman College Basketball Invitational.
Â
The Lions (20-11, 8-8 WCC) take on Cal Baptist (16-14, 7-9) in their first of a four-year Division I transition process. The Lancers broke the previous record for most wins by a first-year team that is an RPI counter with 16.
Â
This will be LMU's first trip to the CBU Events Center. The Lions and Lancers have previously met twice, both at Gersten Pavilion in back-to-back seasons. LMU took both matchups, winning 92-79 on Jan. 2, 1999, and again, 78-74, on Nov. 20, 1999.
Â
LMU's 20 wins are the program's most since that CIT run in 2012. Those are the two seasons that the Lions have hit the 20-win plateau since 1989-90.
Â
With three All-WCC performers,
James Batemon (First Team All-WCC),
Mattias Markusson (All-WCC Honorable Mention Team), and
Dameane Douglas (All-Freshman WCC Team), the Lions believe that have the pieces to make a deep run in the tournament. The Lions allow opponents to score 62.9 ppg, best in the CBI and 15th fewest in the country.
Â
LMU will play in the CBI for the first time in program history. The Lions last made the post season with CIT runs in 2010 and 2012. The CBI is a 16-team tournament is a single-elimination tournament until the finals, where is shifts to a best-out-of-three matchup.
Â
Wednesday's start time has been moved to 7:30 p.m. to accommodate a double-header for CBU, with their women's team hosting a WNIT game at 5 p.m. The game will stream through Cal Baptist's website as well as the WAC Digital Network, both free of charge.
