The Loyola Marymount Lions (10-7, 2-0 WCC) returned from their 18-inning marathon on Friday night to tough out a thrilling 6-5 victory off the arm of
Josh Agnew, the continued hot hitting of
Trevin Esquerra and some late inning heroics, once again from
Alex Lambeau, to rally past Santa Clara on Saturday night taking the second straight game in the series against the Broncos.
Â
Getting the start for head coach
Jason Gill's team Agnew gave the Lions 6.1 solid innings, throwing 90 total pitches while facing 28 Santa Clara batters. He gave up seven hits, five runs, striking out five and didn't allow any walks for LMU.
Â
Santa Clara got on the board early when they plated four runs against the Lions in the top half of the first. Jason Dicochea doubled to left field off Agnew and with two outs Ryan McCarthy singled to left field bringing in Santa Clara's first run. The Broncos got their three other runs off the bat of Jake MacNichols when he homered to left center giving Santa Clara the four-run lead.
Â
LMU got on the board in the bottom half of the first when freshman
Tommy Delgado singled past the shortstop bringing in the first Lions run.
Nick Sogard,
Brandon Shearer and Esquerra set the table for the Delgado RBI when they loaded the bases off Santa Clara's Matthew McGarry. With the bases loaded Lambeau struck out swinging and
Ryan Ruley flied out to right ending the rally.
Â
The Lions were able to bring in two more runs off the Broncos when Esquerra took a 1-2 Brandon Buckley delivery over the Blue Monster for his team-leading fourth home run of the season. LMU came all the way back tying the game in the bottom of the fourth when Shearer was able to leg out a potential double-play bringing in Sogard tying the game at four.
Â
Agnew then settled into a groove for the Lions, retiring 11-out-of-14 Santa Clara batters he faced before giving way to CJ Fernandeezes in the top half of the seventh. With Fernandeezes on the mound Santa Clara was able to get a run when Dicochea flied out to center bring in Dawson Brigman.
Â
LMU was able to tie the game once more in the bottom of the eighth when freshman
Ben Grunberg smashed a rocket single to left center bringing in
Kenny Oyama who earlier reached base on a throwing error by Brigman.
Â
The Lions were able to withstand Santa Clara putting a runner in scoring position in the top half of the ninth setting the table once more for Lambeau's late game heroics. With one out Esquerra drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball by the Broncos Ethan Heinrich. Delgado struck out swinging sending Lambeau to the plate and the sophomore delivered for the second-straight time in as many nights. Lambeau hit a rocket handcuffing the second baseman allowing for Esquerra to slide past the tag of Tony Boetto giving LMU their second-straight walk off win against the Broncos.
Â
LMU returns to Page for the final contest of the three-game series looking to sweep the Broncos and keep their West Coast Conference record unblemished. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
