LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Winners of two straight, the Loyola Marymount men's basketball team (19-10, 7-8 WCC) has an opportunity to play themselves into an opening-round bye for next week's WCC Championships in Las Vegas.
With a Saturday win at San Francisco (21-8, 9-6 WCC), LMU will earn the right to not have to play in the first night of the tournament, guaranteeing a fifth or sixth seed in conference. Despite the regular season coming to a close on Saturday with the final WCC five games, this will be the first and only matchup between the Dons and Lions this year. The two teams split last year, with each team protecting their home courts.
The Lions are coming off a win on Thursday night where the team erased a 20-point second half deficit to sweep the season series with Santa Clara. With the win over the Broncos, LMU currently has the second most victories for the program since 1990 with 19. On the other side of the court, The Dons have lost their last two games by a total of four combined points.
Two of these teams biggest strengths will go head-to-head against each other on Saturday. San Francisco commits only 10.3 turnovers per game and LMU totals 7.3 steals per game. Both team ranks second in the WCC in those respective categories, trailing only #1 Gonzaga.
Individually, four of the league's top five players in steals per game will be in action at the Sobrato Center.
James Batemon leads the league in steals at 1.72, USF's Frankie Ferrari is third at 1.62 spg, and
Jeffery McClendon and
Joe Quintana rank fourth and fifth at 1.56 and 1.52, respectively.
The WCC Game of the Week will tip of at 1 p.m. and air on Spectrum Sportsnet in Los Angeles and TheW.tv outside of the region.
