IRVINE, Calif. – In a field that featured 16 ranked teams, the Loyola Marymount women's water polo team took 11
thwith a final day win over UC San Diego. The #12 Lions (6-7) topped #T-17 UCSD for the second time in as many weeks, picking up an 11-9 win.
LMU fell behind early before
Morgan Molloy tied the score at 1-all. After UCSD scored again, it was
Mollie Williams who retied the score at 2-even with 1:24 to play in the first. The Tritons scored with seconds remaining in the period to take a lead into the second.
UC San Diego scored two of the first three in the second, with Molloy's goal splitting two from the Tritons. Consecutive goals by
Katie Hungerford then
Morgan Molloy to close out the quarter tied the score at 5-5 at halftime.
After UCSD went ahead early in the third, three-straight LMU goals gave the Lions their first lead of the day.
Hana Vilanova scored back-to-back and then
Marialena Seletopoulou followed to push the lead to 8-6 entering the fourth.
LMU had an answer for all three San Diego goals in the fourth quarter. The Tritons cut it to one with an opening goal in their first possession of the fourth, but Williams responded at 5:07 to increase the lead back to two. With a 4:20 UCSD goal, the Lions again created separation as Seletopoulou pushed it to a 10-8 game with 3:33 remaining. One final goal from San Diego and response from LMU came at 2:40 and then 2:20 as Seletopoulou gave the Lions the 11-9 advantage and win.
The Lions will next compete at the two-day Claremont Convergence to open March next Friday and Saturday.
