IRVINE, Calif. – The Barbara Kalbus Invitational opened on Friday afternoon as #12 LMU and #6 Michigan squared off. Despite a one-goal difference in the second half, the Wolverines (7-5) pulled away to defeat the Lions (4-6), 11-9.
After Michigan jumped ahead first,
Marialena Seletopoulou evened the score at 1-apiece with her powerplay goal with 4:44 on the first quarter clock. The Wolverines scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead before
Mollie Williams got one back in the final minute of the quarter.
LMU took advantage of the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead. Seletopoulou converted another powerplay and
Hana Vilanova scored the go-ahead goals at the 6:45 mark. Three consecutive Michigan goals gave the lead back to the Blue before Seletopoulou ended the run with her third goal of the half on the player advantage. With one second remaining, Michigan scored once again to take a 7-5 score into intermission.
The Wolverines opened the second half with a goal, but reigning GCC Player of the Week Morgan Molly and Williams scored consecutive goals to make it a one-score game once again, 8-7. UM pushed it to a 10-7 advantage before Williams scored a final goal to close out the third.
Each team scored in the fourth quarter with
Katie Hungerford's goal with 3:35 on the clock the final change to the score line to make it an 11-9 final.
The Lions will now face #T-17 Long Beach State Saturday at 11:45 a.m. from Corona del Mar pool. LBSU fell to #3 UCLA, 16-6, in their opening game.
