LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount women's tennis team won its home opener 4-1 against Arkansas (7-3) Saturday afternoon.
"It's always great to beat and SEC conference team," said head coach Agustin Moreno. "They beat the No. 9 ranked team, Oklahoma State a couple weeks ago so no doubt we can compete with anybody on the nation."
The Lions (2-3) put up a fight in doubles play, but couldn't take the point. Lillian Gabrielson and
Elvira Juravliova picked up a quick win on court three 6-2.
Eva Marie Voracek and
Veronica Miroshnichenko were defeated by Tatum Rice and Martina Zerulo on court one 6-4, while
Sofiya Gaisina and Yesica De Lucas were defeated by Lauren Alter and Thea Rice on court two 6-4, clinching the match for Arkansas.
Down 1-0, the Lions turned things around in singles play. There was a forfeit on court five, giving Gabrielson the win. Tied 1-1, the Lions took the lead after Juraliova beat Alter on court four 6-4, 6-1.
Voracek picked up a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Martina Zerulo on court two, while
Camila Tumosa beat Shwetha Prabakar 6-4, 6-2 on court six, clinching the match for the Lions.
The Lions will be back in action on Thursday February 21 to take on Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif.
