Lions Fall to USD, 67-59

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team opened up its second conference game of the season against San Diego on Monday, where the team fell to the Toreros 67-59   in Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions had a tough first quarter, as San Diego went on an 11-0 run, to quickly take a double-digit lead. The Lions left the first quarter trailing the Toreros 19-9. 
 
LMU put up a strong showing second quarter, as a layup from Chelsey Gipson started an 11-2 run, for the Lions to only trail by three points. The Toreros responded, but the Lions then went on a 7-0 run, making it a one-point game. USD responded, and closed out the quarter on top of LMU 33-29. 
 
Both teams came out in the third to have a low-scoring quarter, as the Lions only scored seven points, and USD scored eight. The Lions went into the fourth down 41-36. 
 
The Lions pushed through the fourth quarter, coming within six points of USD, but couldn't take the lead back, as LMU closed out the game 67-59. 
 
Gipson led the team in points with 16, while CiCi Ellington had 13 and Jasmine Jones had 12. Raychel Stanley led the Lions in rebounds with 12, while Ellington, Gipson and Aspyn Adams all had two assists. Stanley, Jones and Meghan Mandel led the team in blocks with two a piece, while Gipson led in steals with two. 
 
The Lions shot 35 percent from the field and 18 percent from behind the arch, while USD shot 41 percent and 29. The Lions had six total blocks, 37 rebounds and 10 assists. 
 
Up next: The Lions will take their first conference road trip of the season this week. As the team will take on Pacific on Thursday and Saint Mary's on Saturday.
