Lions Drop First Conference Road Game

STOCKTON, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team put up a strong showing against University of the Pacific on Thursday night with a second quarter rally, but the Lions fell 76-67 in the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif.

An early foul put Pacific on the line, putting the first two point on the board. Aspyn Adams responded, draining a three-point shot to give the Lions their first lead of the game. After three more lead changes, the Lions closed out the first down 12-9. 
 
Raychel Stanley put the first three point on the board for the Lions after a made free-throw and a jumper to tie things up at 12-12. Pacific went on a 12-2 run, but the Lions responded with an 11-0 run to tie things up at 29-29. Pacific put up five quick points, but then Chelsey Gipson closed out the half with a three-point shot at the buzzer. The Lions left the half down 34-32. 
 
The teams were neck and neck in the third, as there were several lead changes and several tied scores. The Lions put up 19 points in the third, compared to the Tigers' 17. A three-pointer from Jasmine Jones tied things up at 51-51 to close up the third. 
 
The Tigers gained momentum in the fourth quarter, as they maintained the lead for the rest of the game, The Lions closed out their first conference road game with a 67-76 loss. 
 
Gipson led the team in points with 22, marking her season high, while also leading the team in rebounds with eight. CiCi Ellington and Jones both had 12 points a piece. Meghan Mandel led the team in blocks with five, while Stanley had two assists and Gipson and Ellington had three steals. 
 
Both teams shot 41.8 percent from the field. The Lions shot 68.2 percent from the free-throw line, while the Tigers shot 75.9. LMU shot 42.9 percent from behind the arch and had 33 total rebounds compared to Pacific's 30. 
 
Up next: The Lions will head down the road to Saint Mary's to take on the Gaels on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
