LOS ANGELES – It was a battle of two of the Western Water Polo Association's bests as #12 LMU (12-10, 5-2 WWPA) and #11 UC Davis (12-7, 6-0 WWPA) met on Thursday afternoon at Burns Aquatics Center.
The Lions started the game trailing 3-1 before two full minutes ticked off the clock. Consecutive goals by
Blazo Mitrovic including a penalty at the 5:48 mark and an even-strength goal on the ensuing possession gave Blazo all three LMU goals in the early going and tied the game up at 3-all. After UC Davis got one back,
Matthew Knoedler responded with an equalizer to knot the game at 4-4. The Aggies closed out the period to retake the two-goal advantage.
Alexandros Athymaritis and
Daniel Roth teamed up with back-to-back goals to tie game at 6-6 with 4:52 to play in the second quarter. The Aggies would add one before the half to give the away team a 7-6 break at intermission.
LMU's answer came in the form of another Athymaritis goal right out of the break, less than 30 seconds into the new period. After UC David went back up by one,
David Carrasco sent the teams into the fourth quarter all squared up at 8-8.
Joseph Shaw pushed the Lions ahead by a goal with 5:40 remaining in regulation, but the Aggies closed out the game with the final four goals to earn a 12-9 win.
Zach Zemliak recorded double digit saves for the fourth time this season, finishing with 13 saves on the day.
LMU will remain at home on Saturday to face Occidental at 2:30 p.m. Following the match,
