Lions Fall to Santa Clara, 3-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team (15-14, 9-8) fell to Santa Clara 3-1 on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Santa Clara opened up the first set with a 5-1 run to take an early lead. The Lions took the lead after going on a 6-0 run, but the Broncos responded and tied things back up. The teams tied things up five times, and there were two lead changes. Santa Clara then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, and closed out the set on top of the Lions 25-18. 
 
The Lions responded in the second set, as Alexis Morrow quickly had a kill, and then Savannah Slattery had a service ace. Santa Clara responded and the teams were neck and neck the rest of the set, as there were seven tied scores and two lead changes. Tied at 24-24, two kills by Sierra Bartley gave the Lions the second set win. 
 
Tied at 1-1, Santa Clara put up the first point in the third set, but the Lions responded and quickly took the lead. LMU held onto the lead for most of the set, but then the Broncos tied things up at 20-20 and then took the lead and won the set 25-23 after tying things up six times and two lead changes. 
 
Down 2-1, the Lions continued to battle in the fourth set. The Broncos took the lead, but the Lions were able to tie things up five times. The Lions were able to tie things up at 22-22, but then Santa Clara scored three points to give the Broncos the match win. 
 
Bartley led the team in kills with 16, while Slattery had 13. Tess Reid had 41 of the Lions' 47 assists. Bo Culo led the Lions in digs with 15.
 
The Lions had seven service aces, compared to the Broncos' six, while LMU had one block and SCU had 11. 
 
Up next: The Lions will play their last match of the season on Tuesday, as the team will take on San Diego on the road.
