LOS ANGELES – The #13 LMU men's water polo team (12-9, 5-1 WWPA) completed their comeback effort on Saturday, erasing an early deficit to defeat Concordia (8-13, 3-3 WWPA), 17-14.
The two teams traded off goals in the early goings of the first quarter, with
Blazo Mitrovic tying it at 1-1 and
David Carrasco tying it a 2-2. The Eagles rattled off two straight goals to close out the period and take a 4-2 lead.
After
Joseph Shaw opened the quarter with a goal to bring the score within one, Concordia got it right back on the ensuing possession. Mitrovic scored three of the game's next four goals to even the score at 6-all with 3:55 remaining in the half. Concordia responded with the next two goals, before LMU's
Austin Clark and Nick Rimlinger each scored with less than a minute remaining to even the score heading into the break.
The Lions took their first lead of the game as
Joseph Cavazos scored less than a minute into the third quarter. The period saw a total of three ties as the two teams traded off each of the seven goals. Scoring by
Alexandros Athymaritis then Cavazos were each equalized, before Mitrovic ended the period with a goal at the 25 second mark to give his team a 12-11 advantage.
Cavazos and Carrasco scored on ensuing possessions early in the fourth quarter to push LMU's lead to 14-11 with six minutes to play. The Eagles closed it into a one-goal game with 4:58 to play before Cavazos and Athymaritis scored one after another to give LMU a three-goal cushion once again. Mitrovic ended his night with his sixth goal of the day with two seconds showing on the game clock.
Zach Zemliak earned the win after making six saves in relief of
Jon Lien.
The Lions will remain at home for two games this upcoming week. Conference-unbeaten UC Davis comes to Burns Aquatics Center Thursday at 3 p.m. The senior class will be honored following Saturday's game against Occidental.
