The Loyola Marymount University Lions women's swimming team took to the pool for the first time, opening their 2019-20 season on Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5. In the Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Relays on Friday afternoon, LMU finished second behind Pepperdine in the Division I category lacking diving and depth to challenge the Waves.Ā Ā Many Lions turned in fast early season splits setting them up for solid performances at Saturday's pentathlon competition which required each swimmer to compete in one of the three five-event combinations offered.Ā Ā Overall winners were determined by adding finish times for each of the five events in the category and awards given to the Top-10 based on the lowest combined times
Short Medley: 50 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Breast, 50 Free, 100 Individual Medley:Ā Swimming in the Short IM Pentathlon, freshman Kelli Andrade nabbed a third-place finish overall with a combined time of 2:59.37. The Lion newcomer scored her highest placing in the 50 breaststroke, placing second with a fast early season time of 31.61. Andrade was also strong in the 100 IM, placing fourth in the event with a time of 1:02.98. Junior Serena Myatt also nabbed a Top-10 award, claiming fifth overall at 3:01.38 with her top individual placings being fifth in the 50 Fly (27.68) and 50 Free (25.63).Ā Ā Myatt demonstrated her versatility by placing in the Top-10 in all five of her individual events.
Freestyle Pentathlon: 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 Freestyle:Ā SeniorĀ Lanna KozlowskiĀ combined to post a time of 8:56.96 over the five freestyle events to claim fourth overall. Kozlowski's top event was the 500 Freestyle where she earned a third-place finish with a strong early season time of 5:16.97.Ā Junior Alexis De BeverĀ just missed a Top-10 award, placing 11thĀ out of 32 competitors in this category.
Long Medley: 100 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Free, 200 Individual Medley:Ā LMU's best finish in the Long Medley Pentathlon went toĀ senior Christine Chan who took 13th overall with a combined time of 6:39.08.Ā Ā Chan's top event was the 200 IM where she placed eighth out of 41 competitors with a time of 2:17.06.
Several other Lions earned Top-10 placings in individual races including:Ā Ā Junior Olivia Nielsen, 100 Butterfly (6th), freshman Mikayla Tseng, 100 Butterfly (8th), 50 Butterfly (10th), freshman Sarah Lu, 100 Backstroke (6th), junior Audrey Hixon, 100 Backstroke (8th) and senior Gabby Carufel, 50 Backstroke (9th).
The Lions will return to action on Oct. 18 when they travel to Seattle for two days of competition against Seattle University and Grand Canyon University.Ā Ā LMU's first home meet of the year will be Nov. 2 when it hosts the University of San Diego at 2 p.m. at the Burns Aquatics Center.
