Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lions Run Past No. 23 Toreros

LMU remains undefeated in WCC play

The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's soccer team (9-4-3, 4-0-0 WCC) got goals early in both halves and a late score in the second half propelling them to a 3-1 victory over No. 23 San Diego on Wednesday night. The Lions extended their win streak to three games and remain undefeated in the West Coast Conference.

The Lions went on the offensive early in the game, putting up a pair of shots in the first couple of minutes before getting the first goal of the match off Gerardo Lopez's first goal of the season. Lopez was able to get the ball past the keeper on the corner from Bastien Oberli.

For the first half, the Lions outshot the Toreros 10-6, had more shots on goal 7-2 and were tied in corners at two apiece.

Heading into the second half, LMU didn't waste any time in getting their second goal of the game. Oberli, off the assists from Jack Sauls and Narciso Cervantes, was able to flick the ball over the keeper's head in the 51st minute for his third goal of the season. For the game, Oberli had one goal and one assist in his 52 minutes of action.

San Diego was able to cut into the Lions lead when the Toreros were awarded a penalty kick opportunity in the 63rd minute. Alfredo Cortez, getting his fourth start of the season, went left but the ball was struck to the right making the score 2-1 LMU.

LMU was holding on to their one goal lead and almost extended it in the 77th minute when Duhaney Williams sent a shot that went just over the crossbar. Williams wasn't deterred because a few minutes later he took a Dylan Shockey assist and put the ball in the back of the net in the 79th minute for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Lions were able to turn away the rest of the San Diego's opportunities to score and left Torero Stadium with their ninth victory of the season and second over a nationally ranked team.

Up next for the Lions is a return to Sullivan Field for their final regular season home match of the season when they take on the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday, Nov. 2 for Senior Night with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.
