Lions Pick Up Third Straight Home Sweep

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team (9-7, 3-1 WCC) picked up its third straight home sweep, as the team beat Gonzaga 3-0 in Gersten Pavilion on Thursday night.

The Lions continue to dominate at home, as the team opened up set one on a strong note, as the Bulldogs gave LMU its first four points from errors. Rose Booth had the first kill of the night for the Lions. Gonzaga held the Lions to a close first set, as the Bulldogs tied things up 12 times, while there were four lead changes. Tied at 14-14, the Lions rallied and took the lead for the remained of the set. LMU went on a 4-1 run to win the set 25-18. 
 
Up 1-0, the Lions got off to a slow start in set two, as Gonzaga controlled almost the first half of the set, allowing the Lions to tie things up, but not take the lead. Tied at 11-11, an attack error by the Bulldogs gave the Lions their first lead of the set, the Bulldogs tied things up several more times, but LMU held onto the lead. A 9-2 run gave the Lions the second set win, sealed with a kill from Megan Rice. There were nine total ties and three lead changes. 
 
With one more set to win, Rice opened up set three with a kill, and then responded with another one after a kill from Gonzaga. The Bulldogs tied things up and then went on a 5-0 run, taking their largest lead of the set. LMU responded and tied things back up. Another kill from Rice gave the Lions their lead back. LMU allowed a few more ties, but didn't let the Bulldogs take over for the rest of the set. At match point Savannah Slattery had a kill, making it a 25-19 set for LMU, securing the match. Set three had eight tie scores, but only two lead changes. 
 
Rice led the Lions in kills with 17 and a .406 attack percentage, while Slattery had 14 and a .360 attack percentage. Jessie Prichard led the Lions in assists with 23, while Tess Reid had 15. Emmelyn Walters had eight block assists, while Rice had four block assists. Bo Culo led the Lions in digs with 16. 
 
The Lions had eight blocks, compared to Gonzaga's five. LMU had an overall .340 hitting percentage, while the Bulldogs had .152. LMU put up three service aces, one from Alexis Morrow, one from Tess Reid and one from Ella Boehle.
 
 
Up next: The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to host Portland at 1:00 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
