The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's soccer team (8-4-3, 3-0-0 WCC) played in their sixth overtime game, third straight against West Coast Conference competition, and pulled out a thrilling 2-1 victory over the University of Pacific in Stockton on Saturday night.
The Lions benefitted from
Alex Liu's first goal of the season and the game-winner from
Danny Garcia in the 97th
minute propelling LMU to the overtime victory.
For the game, the Lions outshot the Tigers (10-8) and had more shots on goal (7-2) while conceding three more corners to Pacific (7-4). The Lions and Tigers combined for 33 total fouls with LMU tallying 19 to Pacific's 14.
The Lions and Tigers held each other scoreless for the first 45 minutes of the match with Pacific putting up five shots to LMU's four. The Lions had the advantage in corners (4-3) but neither team could get the ball to find the back of the net.
LMU broke through early in the second half when Liu found the back of the net in the 50th
minute, getting the ball past Pacific's keeper on the lower left side.
With the Lions up by one, they were able to hold the Tigers to two shots over the next 20 minutes until Pacific was awarded a penalty kick shot in the 74th
minute. The Tigers took advantage of the opportunity and put the ball in net, getting it past
Alfredo Cortez to tie the game at one.
With the game tied at one, neither team could get the go-ahead goal before the whistle sounded at 90 sending the contest into overtime.
The Lions, winners of their previous two straight overtime games, didn't need very long as Garcia ended the contest on his goal from a
Jack Sauls assist in the 97th
minute keeping LMU undefeated in conference play.
Up next for the Lions is a road date with the No. 18 San Diego Toreros on Wednesday, Oct. 30 with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
