Lions Fall to No. 12 BYU

LOS ANGELES  – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team (12-9, 6-3 WCC) fell to No. 12 Brigham Young University at home on Thursday night in Gersten Pavilion, as the team lost 3-1.  
 
LMU vs. BYU 25-22, 25-12, 15-25, 25-22 
The Cougars opened up set one with two points, but the Lions quickly responded, as Emmelyn Walters put LMU on the board with a kill, and then a kill from Megan Rice tied things up. LMU was never able to take the lead in the first set, but the team did tie things up nine times. LMU tied things up until 22-22, but BYU then went on a 3-0 run to win the set. 
 
Down 1-0, the Lions struggled through set two, as they were only able to tie things up one time, but then BYU gained momentum and went on an 8-1 run, and then quickly won the set 25-12. 
 
LMU responded in set three, as the team was able to quickly tie things up with BYU at 2-2, and then take the lead after a kill from Rice. There were five tied score and three lead changes throughout the set. The Lions went on an 8-1 run to take their largest lead of the set. LMU took its first double-digit lead at 20-10, and then went on to win set three 25-15. 
 
The Lions battled through set four, as there were 12 tied scores and six lead changes. With the score tied at 22-22, BYU scored three points to win the set and take the match. 
 
Rice led the team in kills with 18, while Slattery had 12. Tess Reid put up 21 assists for the Lions, while Jessie Prichard had 20. Alexis Morrow led the Lions in blocks, totaling seven. 
 
The Lions outscored the Cougars in kills with 47, compared to BYU's 41. LMU also had eight service aces, while BYU had two. 
 
Up next: The Lions will be back in Gersten Pavilion on Saturday to host No. 22 San Diego at 1:00 PM.
