The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's soccer team (7-4-3, 2-0-0 WCC) played in their fifth overtime game in the last seven outings and needed almost every minute of it, getting the game-winning goal from
Bastien Oberli in the 107
th minute propelling LMU to a 2-1 victory over Portland.
The Lions closed their second longest homestand of the campaign with a victory and will now end the regular season playing four of the next five games away from Sullivan Field.
LMU was able to get on the board first as sophomore
Jack Sauls sent in his second goal of the season off a
Danny Garcia assist past the Pilots goalkeeper, giving the Lions an early lead. With the goal, Sauls is now one of seven Lions with two more goals on the season.
The Lions, as a team, outshot the Pilots (20-14) and had the advantage in corners (8-3) for the game.
LMU took the lead into the locker room after the first 45 minutes and heading into the second half the Lions looked poised to build on their one goal lead. In the 52
nd minute however, Portland was able to get the equalizer on a Lions own goal that knotted the game at one a piece.
Both teams kept up their aggressiveness the remainder of the second 45 but neither could get the ball to find the back of the net sending the game into overtime. In the second half both teams were tied in shots (8-8) and the Lions had the advantage in corners (4-1) but couldn't convert on their three extra opportunities.
The first overtime session saw the Lions put up three shots but nothing was able to get through the keeper prompting a second overtime session.
In the second overtime session the Lions broke through in the 107
th minute as
Dylan Shockey was able to get a pass through to Oberli who drilled his shot into the back of the net sending the Lions to their second-straight win against WCC competition.
The Lions next opportunity on the pitch will be in Stockton, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 26 against the University of Pacific with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
