LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's soccer team (3-8-2, 2-1-0 WCC) played the final fifteen-plus minutes of Sunday's PCH Cup down a player following a late red card. Despite the disadvantage, the Lions were able to hold off Pepperdine (6-5-2, 2-1-0 WCC) until the 105
th minute when Pepperdine finally scored the only goal of the game to win 1-0.
"Pepperdine is always a great team, and I told our players before the game that the last four years have been a 1-goal game," said Head Coach
Michelle Myers. "I thought that we had some offensive chances, especially early, that maybe if we put away we don't have to defend as hard late. We had one towards the end, that we thought was a great chance, and their keeper just made the save on it."
Jackie Fiacco had a header attempt in the 80
th minute that could have led to the game being decided in regulation had Pepperdine not made the save. Fiacco accounted for both of LMU's shots on goal, and recorded two of the team's eight total shots.
The game-winning goal was scored as Pepperdine's defender took space and shot a hard ball into the upper 90 that
Sadie Kenny was unable to reach. Kenny made six saves on the day.
LMU totaled five corner kicks, compared to four from the Waves, with two coming in the first overtime session.
"It's hard to play down a man, but we're very, very proud of the effort today," said Myers. "Like I told the girls, we feel like we continue to get better as the season goes on. We continued to battle today, but unfortunately it didn't go our way."
LMU will play a Friday night road game at San Diego on Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.
