Lions Rout Competition, Go Undefeated at CBU Mini

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The 2019 season opened in dominating fashion as #15 Loyola Marymount women's water polo (2-0) outscoring opponents 31-7 in two games in Saturday's Cal Baptist Mini Invitational.

GAME 1LMU 18 – Chapman 1

The Lions scored the first 15 goals of the season, and only allowed one altogether to Chapman in their first game of the tournament.

Hana Vilanova picked up where she left off a season ago by scoring four first half goals on four total shots to lead the team and help LMU carry a 13-0 lead into halftime.

The senior class led by example throughout the game, with Brianna Quade scoring three goals, and Katie Hungerford and Morgan Molloy accounting for a pair apiece.

Abbey Grosse scored twice in the first quarter, and the remaining LMU goals came from first-year Lions. Head Coach Kyle Witt's transfer class accounted for four goals and freshman Mei Vilanova added the exclamation point with the game's final goal. Transfer Marialena Seletopoulou scored in the opening period, transfer Mollie Williams scored two goals in the second quarter, and transfer Megan Plank scored in the third.

In the cage, senior Sky Flores allowed just the one goal on 15 Chapman shots and held the Panthers to 0-for-10 on powerplay opportunities.

GAME 2: LMU 13 – Pomona-Pitzer 6

Marialena Seletopoulou scored five goals on five shots as LMU completed their sweep at the Cal Baptist Mini. The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, with Seletopoulou scoring three of the game's first four goals.

Abbey Grosse scored her first of two in the opening period and  Melyssa Moore added one as well.

Both sides scored three times in the second quarter, with Morgan Molloy finishing both of hers in that second period.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the Lions pushed their lead to 13-3 with Hana Vilanova, Mollie Williams, and Katie Hungerford scoring three consecutive goals in the quarter's first 1:40.

After the Sagehens scored their final three goals of the game, Seletopoulou added her fourth and fifth to seal the victory at 13-6.
