LONG BEACH, Calif. – Despite trailing by two goals in the first half, Loyola Marymount women's soccer erased the deficit to earn a 2-2 road tie at Long Beach State. The Lions (2-6-3) now shift focus to the West Coast Conference slate for the remainder of the season.
"We are very proud of the players and how they responded," said Head Coach
Michelle Myers. "It was a physical game and we battled hard and never gave up."
LBSU (5-4-1) scored right off the bat, taking a 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute of play. The home team doubled their lead in the 31
stminute with a header goal.
The Lions responded the following minute with a ball that
Kallie Kampfl sent back into the box and
Shelby Cormier put it home. The teams took that 2-1 score line into the halftime intermission.
Last season's leading scoring,
Melissa Lewis, opened her book on the year with a 72
ndminute equalizer to tie the score at 2-all. Lewis headed home a corner kick from Jacki Fiacco.
In overtime, each team recorded one shot in the first ten minutes, but LMU took four in the second OT, forcing Long Beach State's goalkeeper to make three saves. Both Charlie Pruitt for the Lions and Imani McDonald for LBSU finished with six saves apiece.
"It is a great result on the road against a very good team and it gives us some confidence heading into conference," said Myers.
LMU opens on the road in their first two West Coast Conference games. The Lions will face Saint Mary's on Friday, Sept. 28 and then head to Pacific on Sunday to close out the weekend.
Following the trip, Sullivan Field will be home to three straight starting with Santa Clara on Oct. 5.
