Lewis Tallies Eight Saves As Lions Take Down No. 13 CSUN

Kris Fourcand and Bjarki Ragnar scored for LMU in the team’s 2-1 victory.

LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's soccer team (2-6) earned a 2-1 victory over the CSUN Matadors (6-3) on Thursday night at Sullivan Filed. Lions' goalkeeper Paul Lewis had eight saves on the night, including seven in the second half, allowing just one CSUN goal when the Matadors took 15 shots including nine on-goal.

Entering tonight's contest, CSUN was ranked No. 13 in in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 and had won two consecutive contests against nationally ranked opponents (UCLA, Cornell). This win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Lions.

LMU went up 1-0 at the 14:13 mark on a goal by sophomore Kris Fourcand who scored off a header from teammate Gerardo Lopez who received the ball on a corner from Leo Zulli to mark the double assist. Fourcand has now scored in two straight games, and has two goals on the season.

The Lions maintained the 1-0 lead through the first half, and struck again in the second as freshman Bjarki Ragnar carried the ball all the way from the right corner of the field, weaving through CSUN's defense to sink a shot past Matadors' keeper Henrik Regitnig. This was the first goal of Ragnar's collegiate career.

Daniel Trejo scored CSUN's lone goal of the game at the 85:50 mark, putting it in from close center to cut the Lions' lead to 2-1. Lewis tallied two of his eight saves in the remaining four minutes to help secure LMU's victory.

"Coming together as a team, it's important to do your part," Lewis said. "I got lucky, I got to make a few saves today which could push the team through. In the halftime talk and the pregame talk [Head Coach Paul] Krumpe said it's that one moment that can change a game. We had two moments at the start. We put two goals in. Kris got one, Bjarki won the game with his finish to the near, and we came up fortunate at the end making some saves."

The Lions finished with 12 shots including five on goal as Regitnig had three saves for the Matadors. Ragnar led LMU in shot attempts with four, while Fourcand and Matthew Gooden each had three. CSUN took eight corner kicks to LMU's one on the night.

LMU returns to Sullivan Field next Thursday, Sept. 27, for its next match vs. Cal State Fullerton, with another 7 p.m. start.
