LOS ANGELES – The late-game high-energy situations continued for Loyola Marymount women's soccer Sunday at Sullivan Field, as the Lions (2-3-1) cut their deficit in half but were unable to equalize. Indiana's (3-1-1) two second half goals were enough to beat the Lions, 2-1.
"It's a hard one to swallow, because I thought we had some good chances," said Head Coach
Michelle Myers. "Their keeper came up with some very good saves and at the end of the day we can't give up two goals and expect to win games."
Following a scoreless first half, IU scored the game's first two goals in the 70
thminute and 82
ndminute respectively.
The two-goal lead did not last for the Hoosiers, as LMU capitalized on one of the team's 15 corner kicks.
Shelby Cormier played a corner into the box and after deflecting off a defender fell to
Jalyn Lupo who picked up her first assist of the year when she found
Maki Kono for the 85
thminute goal.
The Lions kept up the intensity and had another opportunity just before the clock hit 89 minutes. After the ball was played into the visitor's box, LMU fought through the chaos to get a series of shots that were ultimately blocked, an inch short of crossing the goal line, and eventually saved by Indiana's goalkeeper, Bethany Kopel.
Kopel saved seven shots against the Lions, while
Charlee Pruitt totaled four saves in LMU's net.
"We will continue to learn from the mistakes," said Myers. "We made some adjustments in our lineup today, and I felt there were some good things there. We will continue to move ahead."
The Lions finished with 17 total shots, with seven coming off the foot of
Skylar Robledo, tying her for 10
thall-time in the single game LMU records.
LMU is Chicago-bound this next week, facing Northwestern on Sept. 6 and DePaul on Sept. 9.
