LA JOLLA – For the second time in as many days, the Loyola Marymount men's water polo team (2-2) split their two games of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. LMU fell in the first game on Sunday, 13-12 in overtime, to Cal Baptist (2-2) before picking up a 12-5 victory over Air Force.
Game 1: Cal Baptist 13, LMU 12 (OT)
LMU and Cal Baptist went back and forth on Sunday in a thrilling overtime contest. The Lancers jumped ahead 2-0 before LMU took their first lead with back-to-back-to-back goals by
Edward Moss,
Matt Braun, and
Blazo Mitrovic. CBU tied it at three-all before
Blazo Mitrovic completed the first quarter hat-trick with two more goals to make it 5-3 after one.
The Lions extended the lead to open the second, with Mitrovic scoring his fourth of the day and
Austin Clark added one of his own. The Lancers got one back with a 1:29 remaining making it a 7-4 LMU advantage going into halftime.
Consecutive CBU goals to begin the third quarter made it a one-goal game, but Mitrovic again showed a response to keep the lead. After the Lancers put one in, Clark and
Alexandros Athymaritis exted the lead to 10-7 with 1:32 remaining in the quarter. With two more goals, Cal Baptist made it a 10-9 game heading into the fourth.
Mitrovic scored his sixth and seventh goals of the game to extend the lead to 12-9 to open the fourth quarter. Three final CBU goals, with the last one coming with two seconds remaining on the clock, forced overtime with the score even at 12-12.
Cal Baptist was able to capitalize in the extra session to take the game, 13-12.
Game 2: LMU 12, Air Force 5
Following a close first quarter, LMU opened up the game the rest of the way. The teams traded off goals in the first period, with
Austin Clark opening the game,
Blazo Mitrovic making it 2-1, and
Daniel Roth closing out the quarter making it 3-2.
The Lions then scored the first three goals of the second, with
Joseph Shaw,
Eric Reitmeir, and
Alexandros Athymaritis pushing the lead to 6-2. After The Falcons put on away, Shaw answered with his second of the quarter to make it a 7-3 game at the half.
LMU pushed it to 9-3 as Reitmeir and Shaw opened the third with consecutive goals. Following an Air Force goal,
Matthew Knoedler made it a 10-4 game heading into the final eight minutes.
Alex Davis added to the lead with the first two goals of the fourth before Air Force added the final goal of the game.
The Lions only allowed one goal in each of the final three quarters to win 12-5.
