GCU Edges LMU 1-0

Lions return to Sullivan Field on Sunday.

PHOENIX – On the road at Grand Canyon University, the Lions and Lopes were scoreless through the first 45 and part-way through the second half until Calvin Kissi of GCU punched one into the net from close center off a rebound to give the Lopes the 1-0 edge that they would carry throughout the contest.
 
Grand Canyon racked up 14 shots in the match, including eight on goal, as LMU keeper Paul Lewis registered seven saves on the night.
 
The Lions tallied eight total shots with six on-goal. Antonio Porreco led LMU in shot attempts with three (all on-goal), followed by Francis Avoce with two shots on goal, Alex Liu with two shots (one on-goal) and Matthew Gooden with one.
 
The Lions had eight corner kicks in the loss, and GCU had six.
 
With the loss, LMU moves to 1-5 on the season. Grand Canyon improved to 3-2 with the victory.
 
LMU returns home this Sunday for an evening match vs. Seattle University at 4 p.m. This game is part of a doubleheader with the LMU women's soccer team, who has a start time of 1 p.m. Sunday's doubleheader will be LMU Athletics' Salute to Service day. Active duty and retired members of our Armed Forces are eligible to receive one complimentary ticket and up to four discounted tickets. The first 100 fans will also receive a Salute to Service T-shirt, and the teams will host post-match autograph sessions.
 
Sunday's men's soccer match begins a three-game home stretch for the team, as they take on Cal State Northridge on Sept. 20 and Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 27.
