Los Angeles, CA (April 24) - Cal State Hayward came from behind to earn a 9-8 overtime win over Chapman in the seventh place game of the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championships at Loyola Marymount University on Sunday morning.
Hayward's Gabriella Keri tied the game at 8-8 with 2:23 left in regulation and then scored again 1:40 remaining in the first overtime period to lift the Pioneers to seventh place in the WWPA. CSUH improves to 16-20 on the season while Chapman falls to 17-13.
The Panthers jumped to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter thanks to two goals by Marci Myer and a goal each from Kristina Eich and Kristin Carter. Chapman would take a 6-3 lead on goals from Myer and Carter with 3:43 remaining. However, CSUH would chip away at the lead with two straight goals to close the half by Elaine Mashburn and Farrah Kunkel to make the score 6-5 at the break.
Both teams would score a goal each in the third quarter and Chapman would retake a two-goal lead on a tally by Nicole Stone with 6:00 remaining in regulation. The goal put CU up 8-6. CSUH would score the final three goals in the game for the win.
CSUH goalie Kim Johnson came up big in net for the Pioneers making 18 overall saves and seven in the fourth quarter alone.
