Los Angeles, CA (April 23) - It was an incredible start to game one of the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championships as Cal State Hayward, the number seven seed, scored 1:22 remaining in the fifth overtime period to defeat 10th-seed Sonoma State 6-5 on Friday morning.
CSUH's Farrah Kunkel took a pass at four-meter and earned a tip by a defender as the ball went in the top right corner for the game winner. Sonoma State's goalie Alejandra Garcia kept her squad in the game with 19 saves.
Sonoma State forced overtime on Tara Musco's goal with 3:24 remaining in regulation. Both teams would score in the first overtime to force three sudden-victory frames before Kunkel's goal.
CSUH will play UC San Diego in game #5 at 3:00 p.m. on Friday while Sonoma State will play 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
