Evening a three-game West Coast Conference series on Saturday night, San Diego (14-17, 5-6 WCC) exploded for 11 runs on 18 hits en route to capturing an 11-4 victory over LMU (14-16, 7-4 WCC) from Fowler Park.
OFFENSIVE LIONS OF THE GAME: Senior Billy Wilson and junior Brandon Shearer finished with two hits apiece for LMU, as Wilson went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Shearer, hitting out of the sixth spot in the order, finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
ROUGH START FOR AGNEW: Sophomore Josh Agnew struggled in his eighth start of the year, allowing eight runs on 12 hits over 2.2 innings of work. Agnew had lasted at least 5.0 innings in each of his previous starts. The right-hander dropped to 3-3 on the season, as LMU fell to 5-3 in his starts.
TORERO PITCHING: Lefty Chris Murphy got the start and earned the victory, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts over the first 5.0 innings of work. Murphy improved to 4-2, while Gabriel Ponce picked up his first save of the year after tossing the final 4.0 scoreless innings of relief.
TOP OF THE ORDER PRODUCTION: The first three hitters in the Torero lineup went a combined 10-for-14 with eight runs scored, four doubles and five RBI. Tora Otsuka was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Shane McGuire went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and one RBI, while Jay Schuyler was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. The trio was 9-for-9 through the first three innings of play as USD led 8-3 after three.
IT HURTS SO GOOD: Senior Billy Wilson drew his 13th hit by pitch of the year in the three-run LMU third inning. That was a meaningful bruise, as it was also his 49th career hit-by-pitch ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" matching the LMU record set by Jim McAnany from 1984-87.
