Box Score April 27, 2018 LOS ANGELES â€" The Loyola Marymount softball team (25-21-1, 8-1 WCC) hits the road to San Diego this weekend to face off against the Toreros (25-21, 4-5 WCC) in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The Lions and Toreros will play a doubleheader on Saturday with games at 12 and 2 p.m., followed by the series finale on Sunday at noon.
The Lions currently hold the best record in the WCC, standing at 8-1 in conference play. LMU has swept its opponents in back-to-back series', defeating Santa Clara at home last weekend and Saint Mary's on the road the previous weekend. The Lions also enter this weekend's series riding a seven-game winning streak, the team's longest winning streak since the 2014 season.
Freshman pitcher Linnay Wilson earned her second WCC Pitcher of the Week honor this week, being named by the conference on Monday. In last weekend's series, she picked up an ERA of 0.00 with one win and 11 strikeouts in eight shutout innings. She allowed just one hit in two appearances against the Broncos, earning the win in her first appearance on Saturday in a complete game with nine strikeouts.
LMU softball was also well-represented in this year's Iggy Awards, held annually by the university's athletics department, as junior Hannah Bandimere took home the 2018 Female Athlete of the Year honor and freshman Delanie Wisz was named 2018 Female Freshman of the Year.
Loyola Marymount and San Diego last met in the final series of last year's season, with the Toreros earning the series win, 2-1. The Lions picked up a 4-3 victory in extra innings in the first matchup of the series, but San Diego bounced back and took the final two games. In LMU's extra-innings victory on May 12, 2017, the two teams were tied up 1-1 until an action-packed eighth inning.
USD scored two runs first to go up 3-1, but LMU came up clutch, scoring three runs to win the game. Alicia Brown was driven home on former Lion Alex Finie's double to right center for the team's first run of the rally. Next, Brooke Christensen secured a sacrifice bunt to move Finie to third, and Finie was brought home on the next at-bat with a bunt by Aria Pogni, tying it up once again at 3-3. The game-winning run was scored on a single to left field by Irma Sanchez, who scored former Lion and pinch-runner Caitlin Harman to secure the 4-3 victory for LMU.
LMU leads the all-time series between the two teams, 82-73, with a 42-30 record at home and 31-35 mark at San Diego while going 12-5 in neutral site games.
