Opening WCC Championship play as the third seed on Thursday morning, LMU men's tennis (18-5) posted a 4-1 victory over sixth-seed Pacific (6-18) from the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.

With the win, LMU advances to play second-seed BYU on Friday at 10 a.m.

"Today was another opponent that is always well coached and prepared," head coach Tom Lloyd said. "Pacific fought and played very well today. We did just enough to get by today at some big moments. It was an all around team effort today and we now turn our sights to the Cougars."

The Lions won a hard-fought doubles point after outlasting the Tigers on court three, 7-6. Charles Boyce / Lucas Moreno cruised to a 6-2 decision on court two, but Diego Nava / Ethan Prost fought to fulfill the second-half of the point. That mark proved big, as Nick Borchenko / Lukas Moenter were knotted 6-6 on court one when the point was decided.

The win for Boyce/Moreno advanced their win streak to six straight matches.

All but one court went three sets in singles, as Errol Smith knocked off Akram El Sallaly, 6-3, 6-4, on court four. Gabriel Diaz Freire followed with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Ross Watson at the top of the order, moving LMU to within a point of a team win.

After Tadiwa Chinamo managed to keep Pacific alive with a victory on court two, Lucas Moreno clinched the Lion win by way of a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) triumph on court three.

The Lions will now prepare for the second-round match against BYU on Friday.
