Moenter Highlights All-WCC Selections, Lions Head to WCC Championships

April 25, 2018

WCC All-Conference Release

WCC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW BY MARLEY ABBOTT

With the WCC Championships scheduled for this week, the West Coast Conference announced the All-WCC selections on Wednesday. Junior Lukas Moenter highlighted the selections for LMU, nabbing a second team selection in singles to claim the first All-WCC selection of his career.

A total of 23 singles student-athletes and 12 doubles teams were recognized as All-Conference honorees. All three individual awards - along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams - were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Nick Borchenko also earned a selection in singles, taking home honorable mention accolades for the second straight year. On the doubles side, LMU garnered a pair of honorable mention selections, as Borchenko and Gabriel Diaz-Freire joined Charles Boyce and Moenter as those honored. The duo of Borchenko/Diaz-Freire were a first team pick a year ago, while Boyce claims his third honor after earning second team All-WCC accolades while paired with Cristobal Rivera in 2016 -- a year after the same duo took home honorable mention honors in 2015.

Moenter has gone 9-5 overall in singles play, including 5-4 in dual matches. He is 4-4 while playing at #2 in the order for the Lions. Borchenko has posted a 19-5 overall record in singles, including a 15-1 mark in dual matches. He is 5-0 in WCC play, 11-1 at #5, and 4-0 at #6 in the order, and has won his last 15 decisions overall.

Borchenko/Diaz Freire have compiled an 11-6 record in doubles play, including going 9-5 in dual matches. The pair is 4-4 at #1 and 5-1 at #2 in the order. Boyce/Moenter are 10-5 overall in doubles, including 6-1 in WCC play. While playing at #2 in the order, they have gone 7-2 overall.

The Lions will now turn their attention to the WCC Championships this coming weekend. The team will head up to Claremont to compete at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Favored to finish fifth according to the WCC polls at the start of the year, the Lions have made a leap up to the third seed after claiming a share of second place in the WCC regular-season standings.

LMU (17-5, 7-2 WCC) will kick off the opening round on Thursday, April 26th, with a 10:00 am match against the No. 6 seeded Pacific Tigers (6-17, 3-6 WCC). In the event of a Lion victory, LMU will advance to the semifinals on Friday, April 27th to meet second seed BYU (18-6, 7-2 WCC) at 10:00 am. The winner of that match would then advance to the finals, which takes place on April 28th at 10:00 am.

LMU posted a 4-1 victory over Pacific on the road on March 31 earlier this season.

Portland senior Michail Pervolarakis bested last season's record-breaking performance by repeating as the WCC Player of the Year, breakout freshman August Holmgren of San Diego is the conference Freshman of the Year and Toreros head coach Ryan Keckley was selected as the WCC Coach of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
