Lions Earn Senior Day Victory over San Francisco

April 21, 2018

Box Score

Hosting San Francisco on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day, LMU men's tennis (17-5, 7-2 WCC) posted a 4-2 victory over the Dons (6-18, 2-7 WCC) to finish the year 10-1 from the LMU Tennis Center.

"This was a great regular-season ending for us, and a great way to send out our seniors," head coach Tom Lloyd said.

Ethan Prost and Diego Nava teamed on court three of doubles, earning a 6-2 win over Paul Giraud/Marco Barretto, to get the ball rolling for the Lions. Senior Charles Boyce, paired with Lucas Moreno, contributed the second half of the doubles point, beating Mert Zincirli and Oliver Poysti, 6-4, on court two.

Lloyd shook up the singles lineup a bit on Senior Day, with Errol Smith playing at #3, followed by Boyce (#4), senior Alex Bourgeois (#5) and Max Kaiser (#6).

Kaiser took home the first singles decision, defeating Barretto, 6-0, 6-1 to push LMU to a 2-0 lead in the match score. Boyce closed out his final regular-season match in convincing fashion, knocking off Poysti, 6-1, 6-1 to push LMU to within a point of victory, but USF responded with two wins with its back against the wall.

Now leading 3-2, LMU got the clincher on court two from Lukas Moenter. The junior topped Johan Joenhagen, 7-5, 6-3, leaving the top court unfinished. Gabriel Diaz Freire was leading 6-4, 5-4 in that spot when the match went final.

"I am very proud of the team for what they have accomplished thus far, and we are still looking to build on this year, as we enter post-season now," Lloyd commented.

The Lions, who will be the third seed in next week's WCC Championships, has a chance to share the WCC title, as the Lions and BYU both sit at 7-2, while San Diego is 7-1 with a match against Saint Mary's remaining to be played on Sunday.
