LOS ANGELES â€" In a Wednesday doubleheader against Columbia and Monmouth, the Loyola Marymount softball team (12-15-1) split the day, first defeating the Lions and second falling to the Hawks.
Hannah Bandimere earned the win against Columbia in the first game of the day, throwing seven strikeouts in the complete game.
Columbia got on the board first in the top of the second on a RBI single to left field to make it 1-0. LMU quickly battled back in the bottom of the second, as Brooke Christenen hit a two-run homer to score herself and Megan Martin, giving the Lions the 2-1 edge.
Loyola Marymount struck again in the fifth for its final run of the day as Shianne Ybarra scored on an error by Columbia's shortstop. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game, and LMU ran away with the 3-1 victory.
The first three innings of Game 2 vs. Monmouth were scoreless until Katie Baron of the Hawks hit a walk-off homer in the top of the fourth to make it 1-0. The Lions bounced back fast with a strong outing in the bottom of the fourth, as Delanie Wisz and Alicia Brown each homered to put LMU in the lead 2-1.
The Lions weren't able to convert any more runs on the day while the Hawks scored one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to earn the 4-2 win over LMU.
Linnay Wilson pitched a full game for LMU, tallying eight strikeouts in the loss.
The Lions return to Smith Field tomorrow for the start of the second weekend of LMU's softball tournament. Loyola Marymount takes on North Dakota State at 1:30 p.m. to kick off round two of the tournament.
