SPOKANE, Wash. – Seven total goals were scored and neither team held more than a one-goal advantage at any point in Sunday's game. The Lions (3-12-4, 1-6-1 WCC) equalized twice and took the lead once, but Gonzaga's (9-4-4, 4-2-2 WCC) final goal proved to be the game winner, 4-3.
Gonzaga struck first, getting on the board just four minutes into the game.
LMU was quick to respond, with
Ali King scoring her second header goal in as many weeks in the 13
thminute.
Simone Handy crossed the ball into the box, and King promptly sent it to the back of the net, tying the score at 1-all.
The Lions converted a penalty kick in the 36
thminute to take a 2-1 lead just before the half.
Maki Kono converted from the spot for her third goal of the season, which is second-most on the team.
The Bulldogs came out in the second half with goals just minutes apart. Gonzaga tied the score in the 53
rdminute and took a 3-2 lead with a 57
thminute goal.
The LMU attack continued and the team ultimately equalized in the 78
thminute.
Sarina Bolden out jumped the opposing goalkeeper in the box and headed back her team-leading sixth goal of the season from the long
Shelby Cormier pass.
The quick response came once again, as Gonzaga scored the game-winner in the 79
thminute with a low, hard shot to the corner of the net.
LMU totaled a dozen shot, and Gonzaga finished with 15 total.
Charlee Pruitt recorded three saves.
The remaining game on the schedule is set for Saturday, Nov. 3, at Sullivan Field. The Lions return home for the final time this season to take on the West Coast Conference leading BYU Cougars (12-4-1, 7-1 WCC). The 6 p.m. game will be preceded by Senior Day recognitions to honor the seven departing seniors playing in their final collegiate game. Tickets are available
