Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Despite Strong Second Half, Lions Fall To Saint Mary's 3-2

LOS ANGELES – Sunday afternoon's men's soccer game between the LMU Lions (5-11, 2-3 WCC) and the Saint Mary's Gaels (15-0-1, 3-0-1 WCC) was a tale of two halves. Saint Mary's went up 3-0 in first half, scoring all three of their goals in the game's opening 25 minutes. This didn't shake the Lions, who came back fighting to score two goals in the second half, but it was not quite enough to overcome the Gaels on the day.

Freshman Jack Sauls got LMU in the scoring column at the 69:42 mark, landing a header in the back of the net off of a cross from the left side by teammate Ryan Bishop. This marked Sauls' third goal of the season, and it was Bishop's second assist.

The Lions struck again less than 10 minutes later at 77:20 when two quick passes in the middle from Brandon Sanchez and Antonio Porreco resulted in a double assist as freshman Alex Liu punched one into the goal's back-right corner from close center, cutting the deficit to just one, 3-2.

LMU remained in control but was unable to score as time expired and ultimately dropped the match to the undefeated Gaels.

The Lions outshot the Gaels 12-3 in the second half and 17-10 on the day, including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. LMU took three corner kicks to Saint Mary's two, and the teams each had 15 fouls in the match.

Liu led the Lions in both shot attempts (4) and shots on goal (3) in the game. Danny Garcia was tied with Liu in attempts with four, including one on goal. Antonio Porreco had three shots (1 on goal) and Matthew Gooden and Jack Sauls had two apiece, with both on goal.

The Lions were without head coach Paul Krumpe and starting goalkeeper Paul Lewis, who both received red cards in the previous match. Mitchell Wilson played all 90 minutes for LMU in the loss, finishing with three saves.

LMU will return to Sullivan Field next Sunday for another 2 p.m. match up, this time against the San Diego Toreros.
