SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After opening Santa Clara's Julian Frasier Memorial Tournament with a win on Friday, Loyola Marymount's men's water polo's two ranked opponents bested the Lions on Saturday.
Game 1: #T-16 Brown 13, LMU 12
LMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead and scored three of the four goals of the first quarter to open Saturday's competition.
Joseph Shaw,
Blazo Mitrovic, and
Eric Reitmeir all scored goals in the opening quarter, with Reitmeir's coming in the final 11 seconds.
Brown followed with three consecutive goals to open the second quarter, and take their first lead, 4-3. Reitmeir again scored in the final minute before the half, making it a tie game at intermission.
The two teams traded off the first six goals of the third quarter, going back-and-forth. Reitmeir,
Alexandros Athymaritis, and Mitrovic each had a response for the previous Bears goal. Brown followed with two straight before
Matt Braun ended the quarter with a powerplay goal with six seconds remaining to cut it to a 9-8 deficit entering the final quarter.
Athymaritis tied the game at 9-all with his goal to open the fourth. After Brown went ahead, Mitrovic retied the game at 10-10, with LMU on the man advantage. Brown built up a two-goal lead before Reitmeir again had a response with his fourth goal of the game. The Bears scored on a powerplay with 51 seconds, and
Daniel Roth answered with the same with just 35 seconds on the clock. LMU was unable to get the final goal, with the final whistle blowing and LMU down a goal.
Robert Halligan recorded 13 saves in his 32 minutes as LMU's goalkeeper.
Game 2: #13 Harvard 14, LMU 11
After Harvard opened the game with a goal,
Blazo Mitrovic,
Alexandros Athymaritis, and
Eric Reitmeir scored three consecutive to give LMU an early 3-1 lead. The Crimson cut into the lead, but
Daniel Arellano and Athymaritis built it back up to a 5-2 advantage. Harvard added a final goal with one second remaining in the first to make it a 5-3 game after the first eight minutes.
Harvard opened the second with three consecutive goals, before
Daniel Roth retied the score at 6-6 and Reitmeir pushed LMU ahead at the half, 7-6.
After Harvard tied it to open the third, Mitrovic pushed LMU back ahead with his goal at the 6:07 mark. The Crimson then scored the final four goals of the period to retake their lead, 11-8, heading into the final quarter.
Austin Clark opened the fourth with his first goal of the day. After Harvard extended their lead back to three,
Joseph Shaw made it a 12-10 game with 3:23 remaining. The Crimson closed with two straight, and despite a late Reitmeir goal, held off the Lions 14-11.
