Neville's Goal Gives Lions 1-0 Win At Gonzaga

Lions move to 2-1 in conference with Sunday's victory.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The LMU men's soccer team snagged another road victory on Sunday, defeating Gonzaga (2-9-2, 0-3 WCC) 1-0 in Spokane, Wash., to move to 2-1 in WCC play and 5-8 on the season.

The Lions defense held strong on the day, not allowing a single shot on-goal as the Bulldogs totaled just six shots in the match. The Lions had nine shots with three on-goal, led by freshman CJ Neville who scored the lone goal of the game and took three shots including two on-goal. The Lions scored just into the second half at the 49:13 mark as junior Brandon Sanchez fed it to Neville who broke free and sent his shot low to the near side past Gonzaga keeper Ben Willis.

This was Neville's second goal of the season, as he also scored in the Lions' 2-1 conference-opening victory at Santa Clara. Sanchez's assist was his first of the season.

LMU and Gonzaga finished the first half with just two shots apiece and zero on goal, but the Lions took charge in the second half, tallying seven shots to the Bulldogs' four in the final 45 minutes. The Lions took eight corner kicks and the Bulldogs had just three.

LMU has bounced back to win four out of its last six games after opening the season with a victory and then dropping six straight matches.

Following today's win, the Lions will return to Los Angeles but finish up their five-game road stretch at UCLA on Saturday, Oct. 20 before coming back to Sullivan Field for their next home matchup vs. Pacific on Friday, Oct. 26.
