PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Loyola Marymount men's water polo team started the second day of the Mountain Pacific Invitational with a 15-14 overtime win over Pomona-Pitzer. LMU advanced to play UC Davis in the second game of the day, 16-7.
Game 1:
LMU 15, #15 Pomona-Pitzer 14 (OT)
The Lions started the day with two goals in the first two minutes, scored by
Dayne Jagga then followed by
Blazo Mitrovic. The two teams would trade off goals to close out the period, with Mitrovic finishing with a first quarter hat trick and LMU holding a 4-2 lead.
Alexandros Athymaritis opened the scoring in the second quarter, which the Sagehens answered by scoring the next three and evening the score at 5-5. Mitrovic was there once again to put an end to the run scoring his fourth of the day with 2:04 before intermission. Pomona-Pitzer added one in the final 15 seconds to make it an even 6-6- game at halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer took their first lead of the game to open the third, but consecutive goals by Jagga, Mitrovic and
Eric Reitmeir pushed LMU back ahead, 9-7. With the Sagehens cutting it down to one, LMU strung together the last two of the quarter, goals by Mitrovic and Athymaritis, to take a 11-8 lead into the final period.
Daniel Roth scored early in the fourth to build up a game-high four goal lead, 12-8. Pomona-Pitzer then scored five of the final six goals of the third to even it back up and make it 13-all headed into overtime. Mitrovic's game-high seventh of the day was broke up that stretch.
The Lions took care of business in the first overtime session, scoring both goals.
Daniel Arellano scored his first of the game with 2:35 on the clock and Jagga followed with 1:04 remaining.
The Sagehens added one in the final stretch, but LMU held on to win 15-14.
Game 2:
#7 UC Davis 16, LMU 7
The Lions fell behind 4-0 after a scoreless first, but responded with the first two goals of the second.
Blazo Mitrovic and
Alexandros Athymaritis cut the deficit in half, 4-2. The Aggies closed out the quarter with three of the final four, with
Joseph Shaw scoring his first of the day.
Shaw opened the third quarter with another goal to make it a 8-4 game with 6:58. The teams traded goals in the third, with Athymaritis scoring twice for the Lions.
Scott Thomas scored LMU's lone goal of the fourth, before UC Davis pulled away for the win.
Coming Up:
The Lions will close out the tournament on Sunday afternoon in the 11
th-place game. LMU will face the 11
th-seeded UC Irvine Anteaters from Belardi Pool at 1:00 p.m.
