LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount scored twice, did not allow a goal, and completed the weekend sweep on milestone victory number 50 for Head Coach Michelle Myers. The Lions (3-1-1) earned its second straight shutout victory after blanking Columbia (1-2-1), 2-0, on Sunday.
"The goal was a really nice goal, with a lot of ball movement and a really nice finish by Maddie," said Myers. "I thought we had a lot of other good opportunities in that second half. Players who came off in the first half, came back on in the second half and really stepped it up. The defense held strong for another game, which is really important for us as we move along in this schedule."
Despite outshooting the Columbia Lions, 9-2, in the first half, neither team could get on the board through the first 45 minutes. It wasn't until the 65th minute that the LMU Lions first found the back of the net, as Maddie Medved finally broke through. Through a series of upfield passes that went from Emma Tyrnauer to Sarina Bolden, it was Medved who had the look on goal and finished on target to give the LMU Lions the lead.
LMU continued to apply pressure, outshooting Columbia 20-4 in the game, and added a late insurance goal in the final minute of play. On a counter attack, Sarina Bolden pushed the ball forward towards the box. After hitting it off the goalkeeper, she collected the ball again and tapped it home with 38 seconds remaining on the clock to give LMU the 2-0 result.
Charlee Pruitt recorded her second consecutive shutout after making two second-half saves on Sunday.
Myers becomes LMU women's soccer's third head coach to reach the 50-win mark. The program's last two coaches, Gregg Murphy (105 wins from 1996-2006) and Joe Mallia (50 wins from 2007-11), are the other two.
"For me, I'm glad to be working with a great group of girls," said Myers. "They do all the work, so I give all the credit for them. I hope they get what they want in their season because they deserve it."
The Sullivan Field homestand continues with another two-game weekend coming on. The Lions host UC Irvine at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 and Long Beach State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10.
