Water Polo Prepares for Tournament's Final Day

LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount men's water polo dropped both of its games on Saturday in the 2017 Mountain Pacific Invitational. No. 20 LMU (3-7) opened the day with a 8-5 loss to No. 13 UC San Diego (4-9), and later fell to Air Force (2-7), who is receiving votes in the national poll.

Game 1: UCSD 8, LMU 5 | Box Score

The Lions got on the board first, with a goal by Matt Braun at the 5:19 mark of the opening period. After the Tritons tied it, Alessio Brunochelli answered back with the go-ahead goal for LMU with 1:40 to play in the opening period.

UCSD scored the lone goal of the second quarter to bring the game to a 2-2 draw at halftime.

After UCSD went ahead for the first time, Neil LeVecke scored the equalizer in the third. Another back-and-forth response followed, with Jacob Markle answering a Triton goal to bring the score to 4-4 with 3:25 to play in the third. UCSD scored two unanswered to end the period, giving either team a two-goal lead for the first time all game.

Zach Gleason scored in the opening minute of the fourth, to cut the deficit in half, but a pair of goals late for the Tritons secured the win for the visitors.

Dominick Beaudine made 14 saves on 36 UCSD shots.

Game 2: Air Force 9, LMU 7 | Box Score

LMU was never able to find a lead against Air Force, trailing 2-0 and 4-1 to start the game. Joseph Shaw scored LMU's first three goals of the afternoon and cut the Falcons lead to 4-3 with 36 seconds before half. Shaw and Air Force's Riley Thomas shared game-high marks with three goals apiece.

After the Falcons opened the third with a goal, consecutive goals by Austin Clark and Matthew Knoedler evened the score at five apiece with 5:25 to play in the third. Air Force pushed it to a 7-5 game after three.

Clark again responded, adding his second, followed by an equalizer from Edward Moss to tie it up at seven with 5:31 to play. The Falcons scored the games final two goals to secure the victory, 9-7.

Dominick Beaudine made 15 saves on 30 UCSD shots.

Sept. 24: LMU vs. Pomona-Pitzer at 10 a.m.

The Lions will take on the Sagehens, who lost the final game of the day at Burns Aquatics Center, 13-8, to San Jose State. The two teams will be the first in the pool Sunday, playing at 10 a.m. Four total games will be played at Burns to conclude the tournament.
