Los Angeles, Calif. - LMU split a doubleheader Tuesday on Smith field, earning a 6-2 victory and then dropping 3-1 to Boston University.
The Lions (6-10) got on the board first in game one. Alicia Brown and Lindsey Matoi got 2 hits apiece, while Matoi picked up her second double of the season.
In the first game of the day the scoring began with Aria Pogni leading off the second inning with a walk. she was quickly advanced to second on Brooke Chirstensen single to left and Taylor Lockwood was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Boston's pitcher threw a wild pitch that scored Pogni and got the Lions their first run.
The Lions added on to the 1-0 lead with a solo shot by Amanda Dirks in the 3rd, but it was Matoi's double that blew open the scoring in the 6th. With runners on second and third Boston had another wild pitch that brought in a run for the Lions. A squeeze was perfectly executed by Lockwood to score Matoi. The rally was topped off by Brown's single to right field that drove in two more runs.
In game two for the Lions, Pogni was 1-for-3 with the lone RBI from her second inning double.
Boston scored early in the first, but the Lions responded shortly thereafter with back-to-back, two out, off the wall doubles by Alex Finie and Pogni. This would provide the eventual sole run of the game for LMU. Finie finished the game 1-for-2 along with Christensen who was 2-for-4 on the day.
"We are getting better each day, which is the goal," said head coach Sami Strinz-Ward. "We pitched well enough to win both games. We had better at bats with runners in scoring position. We continue to put pressure on our opponents."
The Lions continue an 18-game home stretch when the LMU tournament begins play Friday at Smith Field.
