Long Beach, Calif. - LMU picked up another win on the season, with a record of 13-20. LMU dominated in the circle in game one only allowing 5 hits. In game one LMU put up six runs on Long Beach's one, but in game two the LMU took the game into extra innings. LMU would only score two runs and it proved not enough to edge Long Beach.
LMU did not waste any time getting on the board today. Irma Sanchez started the first game with a single. This is becoming somewhat routine for her to begin games with a hit, Sanchez is hitting .577 this season when in a leadoff position. Against Long Beach, Sanchez was advanced on the sac bunt by Caitlin Harman which brought Amanda Dirks to the plate. Dirks ripped a single up the middle to give the Lions the 1-0 lead in the 1st.
The Lions plated the second run in the 4th, Finie started the inning off by capitalizing on a defensive error by Long Beach. Brooke Christensen came in to pinch hit and basted a single through the left side, putting Lions on the corners. Lindsey Matoi came to bat with two on one out, she was able to score Finie on a fielder's choice to short, giving LMU the 2-0 lead.
The Lions scored again in the 5th inning which was almost identical to the first. Sanchez led off with her second hit of the game, Harman sacrificed her over to second on a bunt. Dirks ripped another single up the middle but this time Sanchez would be held up at three. This time however, Alicia Brown was in charge of the scoring, the squeeze was on Sanchez took off from third and scored. LMU lead was increased to 3-0. Long Beach state would pick up one run in the bottom of the inning cutting the Lion's lead to two.
Dirks opened up the top of the 7th with a base hit, her third hit of the game. Brown followed with a double to right putting two runners in scoring position for the designated hitter Aria Pogni. Pogni singled though the right-side scoring one. Junior shortstop Lindsey Matoi blew the game open on her 2-out single to right field, scoring both Pogni and Brown and putting LMU up 6-1 headed into the bottom of the 7th.
Three Lions finished with a multi-hit game. Dirks ended 3-for-4 and recoded an RBI, Sanchez ended 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Christensen had 2 hits in 3 at bats.
On the mound Rachael Farrington pitched a tough game one, and got out of several situations where Long Beach had runners in scoring position less than two outs. Farrington pitched a complete game picking up the win and is now 4-9 on the season. Farrington allowed just 5 hits and struck out one in the game.
Game two saw Alex Finie rip a base hit in the 2nd to start things off for the Lions, Finie would come around to score following a walk and a base hit by Christensen. With bases loaded Sanchez drew a walk scoring another run to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. The third inning was started with a double from Dirks but LMU couldn't capitalize on the early base runner. Long Beach would tie the game in the bottom of 7 to send the game into extra innings. LMU would face a 3-2 setback after 9 innings of play.
In the night cap, Finie hit 2-for-4 and Christensen hit 2-for-3 for the second time today.
LMU returns to play tomorrow at Smith Field to play a single game against San Jose State beginning at 11am.
