GLENDORA, Calif. - LMU women's water polo used a six-goal run spanning the middle two quarters to erase a four-goal deficit and turn it into a 12-9 win over Azusa Pacific in Golden Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (10-17, 3-2) trailed 7-3 after the Cougar's (9-18, 1-3) Alba Espinar scored a on a five-meter penalty shot with 2:43 to play in the second quarter. The Lions then scored the next six goals to take a 9-7 lead to earn the conference win.
Caitlin Schafer led LMU with three goals as the 6-on-5 attack was huge for the Lions. They finished the game 7-for-11 on the extra-man attack, scoring the final three goals of the decisive run thanks to drawn exclusions.
Kiana Etrata and Erin Byrne scored the final two goals of the second quarter to start the run and make the score 7-5 at the half.
Schafer then scored the next three goals, the final tally coming with 5:22 left in the third quarter on the 6-on-5, giving the Lions the 8-7 lead. One they would not let go of. Hana Vilanova ended the run on another 6-on-5 to make it 9-7 with 3:05 left in the third.
The teams traded goals on two occasions, as APU made a goal game at 9-8 and then again 10-9, before Bridgette Alvarez and Kingsley Hill scored on back-to-back possessions for the final margin.
The Lions will remain on the road in GCC play when they travel to San Diego State on Saturday, April 16. Game time is set for 1 pm.
