PROVO, Utah - LMU softball opened West Coast Conference play with a doubleheader split at preseason favorite BYU Friday night at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah. The Cougars (22-16, 1-1 WCC) took game one, 4-0, but the Lions (23-17, 1-1 WCC) rebounded for a big 9-4 win in the nightcap.

After having its offense stymied in the opener, Amanda Dirks led the charge at the plate in the second game, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double, to drove in five of the Lions' nine runs.

A pair of walks and and a pair of home runs helped LMU jump out to an early 4-0 lead in game two. With one out in the top of the first, Stephanie Maciel drew a walk, followed by a Crist home run. Alicia Brown then drew a walk of her own and this time Dirks followed with a shot over the right-center field fence.

Dirks added an RBI-double in the third inning and another two-run homer in the fifth. Alex Finie would knock in a run on a single to left field to make it 8-1 LMU in the top of the fifth. The Lions would also add an unearned run in the sixth.

Rachael Farrington improved to 12-6 on the year with the win in the circle. The junior lefty went 4.1 innings, scattering six hits and two walks for four runs (two earned). Hannah Bandimere, who took the loss in the first game, struck out two and allowed two hits in 2.2 innings of relief.

Meghan von Behren, who collected one of the Lions' two hits in the opening game before adding single and a walk in game two, stretched her reached base/hit streak to 11 games.
