LOS ANGELES - What a difference a day makes. The 18th-ranked LMU women's water polo showed growth in less than 24 hours, using a strong second half push of their own to claim a 10-7 win over Santa Clara in Golden Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Less than 24 hours after a tough single goal setback to Pacific on Friday, the Lions (9-16, 2-2) reversed their fortunes by outscoring Santa Clara (8-11, 0-1) 5-2 in the second half, including a 3-1 clip in the fourth quarter.
Goalie Sky Flores had another double-digit save effort, making 12, and the Lions offense got four goals from Ivana Castro and three from Bridgette Alvarez at two-meter.
The 6-on-5 opportunities kept the Broncos close as they outscored the Lions 5-1 with the extra-attacker advantage. The Broncos finished 5-for-9 on the 6-on-5 while the Lions went 1-for-7.
Late quarter goals in both the first and second frames by the Broncos kept the game tied, 3-3 after the first and 5-5 after the second.
The Lions then earned back-to-back goals to start the third quarter - the first by Hana Vilanova and the second by Erin Byrne - to take a two-goal lead, 7-5. The Broncos answered with a goal but Alvarez kept the lead at two with 5:57 to play in the game.
Alvarez would added another for the three-goal lead. The teams would traded goals for the final margin.
The Lions wrap-up their home stand when they face UC Irvine in a non-conference match-up on Friday, Apr. 8 at 4 pm.
